Nikon N55 35mm SLR Film Camera with 28-80mm Zoom Lens Reviews.

Product Reviews:

It's awesome and it's a Nikon!, November 4, 2003
Reviewer: NHgboy

I have owned two other 35mm SLR cameras. The first was a Nikon FM (fully manual camera) and the second was a Cannon Rebel E (similar to the Nikon N55, in terms of features). I loved the Nikon FM camera and have always wanted to return to a Nikon product. After I lost my Canon, I switched to Nikon again.
This is a great camera. It's light and the most compact 35mm SLR camera I have seen. One can choose between fully manual mode (great for complete creative control) or fully automated mode (for the point and shoot crowd). The N55 also has shutter-priority and aperature priority modes as well as special settings for close-up shots, landscape shots, and sports shots--to name a few.

It is a very versatile camera, focuses sharply and quickly, and is a great-looking SLR. I get compliments on the pictures I take with it, but would recommend Kodak film only!

A Great beginner SLR camera, February 5, 2006
Reviewer: Scott Perez "Jovian9"

I bought this camera to learn how to take great pics. This camera is definitely worth it. Especially for the price it sells for nowadays (I paid nearly $300 for mine when I got it). The N55 takes great shots and is easy to learn on. After using this camera I feel I am ready to upgrade in the near future.
There are problems with this camera that Nikon has acknowledged. After 3 years of using this camera (I think) my camera is exhibiting these autofocus problems. Go to this link if you are having an issue and Nikon will fix your camera for free, or refund you if you've already had this problem fixed and paid for it:

Love Nikon, January 18, 2006
Reviewer: Brandy Fortune

I bought this camera because the price was so low ($199 with the lens) and I wanted to be able to print very large sized photos. I specifically got this to take on a trip to Austrlia and then Nova Scotia. I also took my digital camera as well. of course the prints from this camera are far more beutiful then the digital camera, there is just something about film. I wonder how far off we are from it being gone all together.

I love the auto mode, and I love the manual focus. It's simple to use but flexible if I want it to be. A great camera.

Autofocus Problem is now recognized and repaired by Nikon, December 26, 2005
Reviewer: Richard Smykla (Atlantic City, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

After a year and a half of satisfied ownership, this camera's autofocus system suddenly failed. Nikon now admits the problem and repairs your N55 at no charge to the owner. Better late than never, here's the advisory from Nikon with their repair center shipping information:

Otherwise this camera has been a very good value for me. Good luck with yours . . .

Good camera...if you get lucky!, December 12, 2005
Reviewer: Mrs. Melodie Usrey

I had one of these cameras for almost 2 years. One day it fell off the counter and the lens broke. After price shopping I found it would be cheaper to get a whole new camera than the new lens (or worth it anyway). Well after taking 10 pictures with the new camera the shutter stopped working. This is something I didn't know was a problem with this camera because the other one that was broken was absolutely wonderful. I even loved the quality of pictures it took more than my 8MP Nikon digital. I love using it for black and white photography. It really is a great camera and well worth the price, but as I've learned it does have a flaw with the shutter. So now I've got to figure out how to get it fixed. But if you have a one year warranty I fully recommend this camera to anyone, novice or expert!

 don't buy , November 20, 2005
Reviewer: John Chambless

Like several other reviewers, my autofocus quit. Nikon service made it sound like they'd never heard of the problem. When I mentioned how many other people were writing about a similar problem, the response was the same: "what problem?". I've bought several Nikon's over the years and have liked their service. I'll shop other brands next time.

Amazing Camera, Amazing Price, June 2, 2005
Reviewer: S. Ali

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for 35mm SLR Cameras, and when I saw the N55, it was love at first sight. I was hesitant, but the camera has truly lived up to its standards.
The speedlight that's built in is probably the best feature on any camera. It gives you an idea of how the flash is going to end up, and adds light to night situations.
The auto mode is spectacular; just pressing down halfway on the shutter button focuses on exactly what you want, perfectly.
The weight of this camera is another great bonus. It is so light and easy to carry; I took it with me on a trip to Europe and it was ideal to whisk around the streets of Ireland with this camera around my shoulder.
All of this...and it takes great pictures. You really can't go wrong.

AF will stop working on Nikon N55, August 24, 2005
Reviewer: Camera Bill "Bill"

Do not buy this camera. Mine took lovely pictures for the first two rolls then the AF (auto focus) stopped working. A quick look at online message boards and other Amazon reviews of this camera suggest that this is a VERY widespread problem that Nikon apparently refuses to recognize as a design or manufacturing defect. I have owned nothing but Nikon cameras for over 30 years but this will be my last.
