Product Reviews:

Wide angle zoom a big selling point, January 11, 2006
Reviewer: ginmar "book/digital addict"
This is a decent small camera whose wide angle ability is its major
selling point. The body is compact and sturdy, the controls simple, and
all it has a very handy easy to use design. The drawbacks are a somewhat
harsh flash and the fact that it takes AA batteries, which means it goes
through them at quite a clip. Get rechargeables if you get this camera:
the wide angle is irrisistable for scenery, so you'll wind up using it a
lot.

Samsung--in for the long haul, January 5, 2006
Reviewer: Fred B. Morrison
I have NO brand loyalty, so I never know what I may end up with. In my
review of the Kodak P880 I made it clear what I don't want--a same-old
same-old 38-114
(equivalent) focal length lens. Man, the woods are full of 'em.
Curiously, this Samsung has nearly identical specs to models available
from Ricoh
and Rollei. So who really makes it? I don't know, and maybe it doesn't
matter.
With over 30 years in serious photography and 25 years in photo retail,
I've seen
a lot of failure and success. Some of the names which were big in film are
in
precarious shape in the digital age. Pentax, Olympus, and Konica-Minolta
are struggling. Only Canon shows genuine success in this market.
The big players here are the electronics giants like Sony, Panasonic,
and...
Samsung. They never really found a niche with film cameras, but this
enormous
conglomerate is poised to be a major player in the future.
This modestly-priced model has a very useful zoom range of 28-135, and the
goods to produce impressive looking 12x18 inch prints IF you avoid the
higher ISO settings, a caveat which applies to nearly every other brand as
well. Color is bright without being over-saturated, and the lens is
reasonably flare-resistant, so backlit
shots are not a problem.
I was attracted to this camera because of one of the trick features which
is supposed to isolate a subject by mimicking an out of focus background.
I haven't quite mastered this feature, but I shall keep at it.
Technical wizardry aside, the A55W is worth consideration for its extended
zoom range alone.
Based on my early results with the camera I'm finally ready to declare
Samsung a
major player. All they need is one breakthrough product to become a leader
rather
than simply an also-ran.
